HIV/AIDS Projects
In HIV/AIDS devastated Malawi, where past HF volunteers Kristine Torjesen and Brian Bramson worked with desperately needy children, HF is channeling contributions to the Chitenje Maternity Trust to support Bwaila Hospital in Lilongwe.
In Uganda, HF has sponsored research collaborations focused on low cost methods to slow the progression of HIV infection. Preliminary data on the use of chloroquine in HIV-infected infants has been presented at medical meetings.
HF also supports a follow-up study of a small group of Ugandan children, most of them orphans, who are still alive up to eighteen years after being born with HIV infection. This is yielding new data on the consequences of growing up HIV-infected in a poor country, before antiretroviral treatments were available.
HF also serves as a fiscal agent for several funds that support HIV-infected Ugandan children.
