Haiti

The 2010 earthquake in Haiti, followed by a deadly cholera epidemic and civil unrest, is drawing Health Frontiers volunteers and supporters deeply into efforts on behalf of the hurting children there.

Health Frontiers in collaboration with Rose Charities was able to rent an undamaged house/office in a safe neighborhood in Port-au-Prince.  This complex is providing space for the Haitian Pediatric Society, whose quarters were damaged in the earthquake, as well as housing for volunteer pediatricians and nurse educators.  This house is now completely turned over to the Haitian Pediatric Society to continue supporting their activities.

Health Frontiers also partnered with Rose Charities to facilitate a regular flow of volunteer pediatricians and nurses to help staff the Haitian hospitals.  The needs for volunteers have changed since the immediate post-earthquake period, and HF works with the Haitian Pediatric Society  to determine how to best target volunteer efforts.  Pediatric specialists are need to volunteer at L’Hôpital Université d’Etat d’Haiti (HUEH) for 1 week rotations to provide clinical consultation, bedside teaching and noon lectures for the Haitian pediatric residents residents.  There are also two community hospitals, Hopital de la Paix and Hopital Communitaire Haitian, that are requesting volunteer general and specialist pediatricians for 1 – 2 week periods for clinical care and teaching of 5th year medical students and social residents (the year following rotating internship).

Thank you again for being part of the volunteers and supporters of Health Frontiers.  For more information on our response to the crisis in Haiti, please contact Dr. Marlene Goodfriend.
